Teen Reading Club: an Online Community for Teen Readers and Writers

Librarians from across Canada are welcoming readers aged 13-18 to the fifth annual online Teen Reading Club (TeenRC). The Teen Reading Club (formerly Teen Summer Reading Club) provides teens with opportunities to read books, post their own reviews and personal writing, participate in online chats, discuss books with peers from all over Canada, and win prizes for the reviews they submit.

Teens from our community can sign up for an account and start contributing to the website. Participating is completely free. Sponsored by the British Columbia Library Association, the TeenRC began in BC in 2004 and expanded several years later to interested libraries from across the country. Currently, approximately 650 public libraries across Canada -- some of the largest and some of the smallest -- are participating in the program. Together these libraries have encouraged about 3000 teens to register for the website and post almost 6000 book reviews.

Safety is a priority for the TeenRC program. Librarians (over 100 of them in 2008) read everything that's posted to the site and make sure that the online community is a safe and respectful one. Teens say they feel safe, too, "I like how this is a safe environment," says one teen, "You don't have to tell who you are and you get to see what other people think about books."

Tips for beginners? "Start reading," says Sabina Iseli-Otto, TeenRC Coordinator, "and never stop!"
